THE ART OF THE BOHEMIAN REFORMATION (1380 – 1620)
December 16, 2009 – April 4, 2010
Imperial Stables, Prague Castle, Czech Republic

This exhibition covers the period from the beginning of the Hussite Movement and the Battle of White Mountain near Prague to the revolt of the Czech Estates against the Habsburg Emperors. Historically, several Christian denominations lived alongside each other in the Czech kingdom from the 14th to the 17th centuries, not only Roman Catholics but also the Utraquists (a moderate faction of the Hussites). These different denominations had conflicting attitudes towards the significance of sacred images in religion, but all used some form of art work in their religious devotions and practices.
More than 120 works are on view in this new exhibition. They represent the exceptional quality and variety of the rich artistic tradition of non-Catholic denominations in the Czech lands.

The Lobkowicz Collections have lent the picture, „Saint Adalbert with Jan Hus“, one of eight beautiful paintings on wood originally from the altar of the church at Vliněves, which are normally exhibited in the Chapel at Nelahozeves Castle.  This group of altarpieces depicting the Czech  patrons and various saints is dated to the late 15th century.  Jan Hus appears as a martyr, garbed in red robe, in recognition of his role as founder of the Utraquist Church.

SPECIAL LOAN TO AN EXHIBITION ON LOWER AUSTRIA
18 April – 1 November 2009
Horn & Raabs, Austria and Telč, Czech Republic

For centuries the fates of Czechs and Austrians have been inseparably linked – for better or worse. Political, cultural and religious circumstances – often determined by outside parties – brought peace and conflict in dizzying succession to the border regions between the two nationalities. A new exhibition divided between the Austrian towns of Horn and Raabs and the Czech town of Telč explores this dynamic.

The exhibition in Telč, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, concentrates on cultural aspects – painting and sculpture, applied arts, music and literature, and architecture. On loan to this exhibition from the Lobkowicz Collections is a dish that displays the coat of arms of the Dietrichsteins, an ancient noble family from Carinthia, who split into Austrian and Czech/Moravian branches in the turbulent 16th century.

This dish is from a large service of Habaner ware produced in Moravia in the late 16th century. This rare service probably entered the Lobkowicz Collections through the Countess Eleanora Carolina Lobkowicz of Bilina, the wife of the 4th Prince, as her mother was a Dietrichstein. Outstanding examples from this service are on view in the Ceramics Gallery of the Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle.

SPANISH PRAGUE: A New Exhibition at Prague Castle

This exhibition, organized by Prague Castle and including two loans from the Lobkowicz Collections, brings together paintings, sculptures, books, prints and other works from museums, galleries and church collections throughout the Czech Republic that bear surprising witness to the depth of the influence of Spain, the leading 16th century power, on cultural, social, political and religious trends in Prague and Bohemia, in general.

On loan from the Lobkowicz Collections are a graphic print of Archduke Charles as King Charles III of Spain, later Emperor Charles VI, by Elias Christophorus Heiss, and the portrait of Juan de Borja y Castro by a follower of Anthonis Mor.

The predecessors of the Lobkowicz family had a very close connection to Spain and Spanish culture. Vratislav Pernstein (1530-82), who held a high post as Chancellor of Bohemia married in 1555 Maria Manrique de Lara (c. 1535-1608), who came from an ancient Spanish noble family. They were the parents of Polyxena, who later married Zdenek Vojtech Popel, 1st Prince Lobkowicz in 1603. The marriage greatly influenced the cultural, religious and political orientation of the Pernstein family and Bohemia itself. The family both spoke and wrote in Spanish and an extraordinary number of paintings and objects were imported from Spain, including the well-known statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague. The family became part of the so called „Spanish faction“ at the Habsburg Court.

The Pernstein Palace, later named the Lobkowicz Palace, became one of the main centers of Spanish culture, with Spanish Ambassadors visiting the house frequently. Portraits of Guillén of San Clemente and Don Baltasar de Zúñiga, who were Spanish Ambassadors during the period of 1582-1616 under Rudolph II are on view in the Lobkowicz Palace, just a few steps away from this special exhibition within the Prague Castle complex.

IMPORTANT BIBLE LOAN

The Friends of the Czech Bible Society presents annual exhibitions of Bibles in Czech and other language translations. Earlier this year an exhibition entitled "The Czech Bible over the Centuries" took place in Rome. The Lobkowicz Library will participate in another exhibition of the FCBS at Uherské Hradiště in South Moravia from 16 Oct – 31 Dec of this year.

The original languages of the Bible were Hebrew and Greek. St. Jerome’s translation of the Bible into Latin became the standard edition throughout Europe for centuries after its completion. Religious and political contentions increasingly centered around the desire to translate the Word of God into vernacular languages for teaching and linguistic purposes. By the 14th century translations existed in most European languages and many dialects.

The first Old Czech translation originated in the 9th century. Others followed. The best known translation, the Kralická Bible, dates from the 16th century. The Saint Wenceslas Bible was translated into Czech between 1677-1715. A printed version of this important Bible will be on loan from the Lobkowicz Library to the Uherské Hradiště exhibition. Its inclusion will reflect the intimate relationship between notable Czech figures and their bibles. The personal bible of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founder and 1st President of Czechoslovakia, will also be on view.

BIEDERMEIER EXHIBITION LOANS

The Lobkowicz Collections loaned two pictures by German painter Carl Robert Croll (1800-1863) to an important special exbition at the Prague Castle Riding School, "Biedermeier: Art and Culture in the Bohemian Lands 1814-1848". The Biedermeier movement in arts and ideas was born in Central and Northern Europe at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The new style heralded a "refined simplicity" and spread quickly from the aristocracy and bourgeoisie to society as a whole. Simple and practical forms and shapes found their inspiration in the natural world and everyday life – the environment of home and family, native towns, and the beauty of Nature and natural materials. Painting, drawing and print-making were emphasized as well as the arts and crafts that made Bohemian and Moravian craftsmen famous through the Continent.

This stunning exhibition includes outstanding examples of period glass, porcelain, fashion, jewelry, cast ironwork and the extremely elegant furniture that has become synonymous with the Biedermeier Style – a surprising foreshadowing of the Modern.

The two Lobkowicz paintings on display are A View on the River Vltava at Kamýk, 1842, and A View of the Castle of Bílina, 1843 – part of a series of more than fifty oil paintings and watercolors of Lobkowicz castles and estates commissioned by Ferdinand Joseph, 8th Prince (1797-1868), in 1840 - Roudnice (Raudnitz), Jezeří (Eisenberg), Nelahozeves (Mühlhausen), Střekov (Schreckenstein) and other properties. Croll expressed the epitome of the Biedermeier style in his landscapes, interiors, hunting and other genre scenes.

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which organized the exhibition, generously funded the restoration of both pictures prior to installation. The skillful restorer, Theodora Popova, has a long association with the Lobkowicz Collections. This timely loan brought more of the collections to public notice and insured these charming paintings remain in good condition for future display.
