IMPORTANT BIBLE LOAN
The Friends of the Czech Bible Society presents annual exhibitions of Bibles in Czech and other language translations. Earlier this year an exhibition entitled "The Czech Bible over the Centuries" took place in Rome. The Lobkowicz Library will participate in another exhibition of the FCBS at Uherské Hradiště in South Moravia from 16 Oct – 31 Dec of this year.
The original languages of the Bible were Hebrew and Greek. St. Jerome’s translation of the Bible into Latin became the standard edition throughout Europe for centuries after its completion. Religious and political contentions increasingly centered around the desire to translate the Word of God into vernacular languages for teaching and linguistic purposes. By the 14th century translations existed in most European languages and many dialects.
The first Old Czech translation originated in the 9th century. Others followed. The best known translation, the Kralická Bible, dates from the 16th century. The Saint Wenceslas Bible was translated into Czech between 1677-1715. A printed version of this important Bible will be on loan from the Lobkowicz Library to the Uherské Hradiště exhibition. Its inclusion will reflect the intimate relationship between notable Czech figures and their bibles. The personal bible of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founder and 1st President of Czechoslovakia, will also be on view.
BIEDERMEIER EXHIBITION LOANS
The Lobkowicz Collections loaned two pictures by German painter Carl Robert Croll (1800-1863) to an important special exbition at the Prague Castle Riding School, "Biedermeier: Art and Culture in the Bohemian Lands 1814-1848". The Biedermeier movement in arts and ideas was born in Central and Northern Europe at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The new style heralded a "refined simplicity" and spread quickly from the aristocracy and bourgeoisie to society as a whole. Simple and practical forms and shapes found their inspiration in the natural world and everyday life – the environment of home and family, native towns, and the beauty of Nature and natural materials. Painting, drawing and print-making were emphasized as well as the arts and crafts that made Bohemian and Moravian craftsmen famous through the Continent.
This stunning exhibition includes outstanding examples of period glass, porcelain, fashion, jewelry, cast ironwork and the extremely elegant furniture that has become synonymous with the Biedermeier Style – a surprising foreshadowing of the Modern.
The two Lobkowicz paintings on display are A View on the River Vltava at Kamýk, 1842, and A View of the Castle of Bílina, 1843 – part of a series of more than fifty oil paintings and watercolors of Lobkowicz castles and estates commissioned by Ferdinand Joseph, 8th Prince (1797-1868), in 1840 - Roudnice (Raudnitz), Jezeří (Eisenberg), Nelahozeves (Mühlhausen), Střekov (Schreckenstein) and other properties. Croll expressed the epitome of the Biedermeier style in his landscapes, interiors, hunting and other genre scenes.
The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which organized the exhibition, generously funded the restoration of both pictures prior to installation. The skillful restorer, Theodora Popova, has a long association with the Lobkowicz Collections. This timely loan brought more of the collections to public notice and insured these charming paintings remain in good condition for future display.
